Embodied politics: women, power and public life

Emma Hartvig & Bára Prášilová

March 26 - May 2 2024

In "Embodied Politics," we invite viewers to explore womanhood through the unique perspective of the female gaze, as captured by Emma Hartvig and Bára Prášilová. Drawing inspiration from Hannah Arendt's concept of "Vita Activa," this dual show aims to illuminate the lived experiences of women in the public and private sphere, focusing on their agency, resilience, and complexity. Paradigmatic changes in society’s joint understanding on the shifting and often very fluid differences in the private and public have brought about new perspectives in artistic narratives.

Hannah Arendt’s postwar publication Vita activa attempts to understand the political following the crises of 20th century totalitarianism. Her notions remain contemporary and crucial serving as reminders of human individuality located in a communal world and the importance of democratic ideals. In her study of the state of modern humanity Hannah Arendt considers human kind from the perspective of the actions of which it is capable. She is preeminently the theorist of beginnings: reflections of the human capacity to start something new pervade her thinking. Ever since Plato turned his back on Athenian democracy and set out his scheme for an ideal city, political philosophers had been writing about politics in a way that systematically ignored the most salient political features of human beings – that they are plural, that each of them is capable of new perspectives and new actions.

Through the lens of the female gaze (Hartvig in black and white, Prášilová in colors) the photographers offer a nuanced and intimate portrayal of womanhood, challenging traditional representations and reclaiming narratives that have often been overlooked, misrepresented or even actively repressed. The exhibition showcases a curated selection of photographic works that address a wide range of themes, from motherhood, identity and self-perception and body politics to community engagement.

Each photograph serves as a visual testament to the multifaceted nature of women's lives, capturing moments of strength, vulnerability, joy and defiance. By centering the female perspective, the exhibition invites viewers to confront their own preconceptions and biases, encouraging a deeper understanding of the diverse realities faced by women around the world.

From documentary-style images that bear witness to the struggles and triumphs of everyday life, to conceptual works that interrogate societal norms and expectations, "Embodied Politics" presents a rich tapestry of visual storytelling. Through the power of photography, the exhibition aims to amplify women's voices, fostering empathy, solidarity, and dialogue across boundaries of gender, race, and culture.

As viewers engage with the images on display, they are invited to reflect on their own role in shaping a more inclusive and equitable society. By embracing the female gaze and embracing the complexities of womanhood, "Embodied Politics" offers a compelling vision of a world where women are seen, heard, and valued on their own terms.

Emma Hartvig is best known for her representations of women. She focuses on exploring the parallels between solitude, intimacy and identity employing sculptural, performative and theatrical methods. The figurative elements of her work are an ongoing study of the power and complexity in female representation with an attempt to remove stigma and sexualization around nudity, and to put the focus on women’s own self-representation.

Born and raised in Sweden, Hartvig moved to London where she completed a BA in photography. She lived in Berlin, Paris and Copenhagen and settled in Vienna where she works on long term projects exploring female narratives.
